The species is native to the wetlands of North and South Carolina. Its hatches are one of the most beautiful wonders of nature. The outer perimeter of the hatches is covered with nectar and small stiff hairs. The hatches are normally open at an angle of 60 °. When an insect is attracted to the sweet nectar, it enters the trap; it is then in contact with small hairs which trigger a rapid movement of the trap door which reacts in 1/30 of a second. The plant then secretes an enzyme that dissolves the insect, turning it into a digestible meal. Traps have a limited number of false alarms, so do not stimulate them unnecessarily. The artificial stimulation of the traps causes the plant to lose a lot of energy. If no insects are caught, the plant could deteriorate. The hatch remains closed for several days, depriving the plant of capturing new prey, adding to its misfortune. After about 10 false stimuli, the trap door will no longer react. If you grow your Venus Flytrap in a place where it has nothing to eat, you can give it one to two flies per month.

Never feed your Dionaea a hamburger or other meat, the fat contained in the meat will be fatal. Dionaea muscipula flowers in May and June, a white flowering with 5 petals overhangs the foliage. This may seem like an obvious finding, but the question people ask themselves the most when they see them is, "What is this?" Commonly known as "Living Stones", they seem to be able to fool humans and animals. They belong to the Mesembryanthemaceae (Aizoaceae) family. The word "lithos" in Greek means "stone". Lithops are native to South Africa and Namibia, where they have acclimated to extreme conditions of heat and drought. About 200 varieties are currently known. Lithops are ideal plants for collectors and are among the most popular succulents. Their small size and compact growth allows for cultivate a whole collection in a rather small space. They make excellent house plants. Under ideal conditions, Lithops can live up to 50 years in culture. The fascination and interest in Lithops comes from the considerable variation in colors and patterns of the plants. Some species show considerable variation within the species itself, so with the hybrids that are regularly available, the number of different plants a collector can obtain is almost limitless. The shape, size and color of Lithops lead them to be confused with stones in nature. The plants hide among the stones in defense mode. Grazing animals, which would normally eat them during times of drought to obtain water, ignore them. To prevent evaporation, the leaves changed so much that they lost their leaf appearance and took the form of round pebbles. There is no actual trunk, but a seal at the base of the leaves. The leaves are thick so that they can store enough water to survive through months of drought. The patterns and colors of their surface are similar to the stones of their environment. The flat part of the top of the leaves functions as a window. This window has a very important function, allowing light to enter the body of the plant, where the sun's rays activate cells which assist in the process of photosynthesis. Another extraordinary phenomenon, this product during periods of drought, Lithops can penetrate the ground, becoming semi-subterranean. This way, they are not exposed to the outside elements which could dry them out further. When flowering begins, the bud emerges from a crack between 2 leaves. The flowers are solitary and are born on a stem. most Lithops flower in fall and early winter. They are yellow or white depending on the variety. They open during the afternoons of sunny days. Flowering is related to the amount of light received during spring and summer. Lithops should be 3 to 5 years old before they flower. Several species have flowers that emanate a spicy or sweet scent. Hardiness zones 10-11, (1 ° C / 35 ° F, 4 ° C / 40 ° F). Lithops should not be exposed to temperatures below 40 ° F (5 ° C). They should be left dry in winter and early spring. During this period, the plant will regenerate a new body. The new body will consume moisture and nutrients from the old body for growth. This process will be visible early in the spring. In winter and early spring, keep the plant cool, but avoid freezing. Watering can only be started after the old body has dried out. You can remove the remains of the old body and dead flowers. This can be in May or June depending on the variety. When watering, soak the soil with water. The soil should be able to dry out completely between waterings. Late in spring or early summer, the plant will go dormant. In their habitat, this is necessary to ensure their survival during the long period of intense heat when little water is available, using their reserves to subsist. In the fall, usually around August or September, the plants will start growing. Almost all problems are the cause of too much watering and poor ventilation. They need good light intensity when grown as house plants. Usually a window to the south is a good place, unless it exposes the plant to sun all day, which should be avoided. The soil should drain quickly. Pots 3 to 5 inches deep are recommended. Good commercial cactus soil is recommended. They are native to Mexico and northwestern South Africa. The genus Echeveria is named in honor of the Spanish botanist Atanasio Echeverria Codoy. Several species are wonderful garden plants. It is a popular, beautiful and easy to grow kind of plants at home. Grouping several different Echeveria together is a great way to showcase the different leaf shapes. Rosettes reach up to 20 cm in diameter and eventually form other shoots. They usually develop fleshy leaves in a rosette taking on several interesting geometric shapes and a variety of colors, from green to gray, blue, mauve, pink and almost white, often with contrasting colors. Plants do not require pruning. Most species lose their leaves in winter. Dudleyas prefer a dry summer, which is their period of dormancy. Since it is the opposite for Echeveria, we often find these 2 genera in the same garden. Echeveria are polycarpic, meaning they can produce flowers and seeds multiple times during their life. The flower stems are attractive, sporting yellow, red or white bell-shaped flowers, some with an interesting gradation of colors. Hardiness zones 9-11, (-5 ° C / 25 ° F, 4 ° C / 40 ° F). Most species can thrive in shade and tolerate light frost. Plants prefer indirect sunlight. During the growing period, normal room temperature is appropriate. The plants are rather drought tolerant. This vine grows on the mountainside at an altitude of 900-1800 meters, so it is a high altitude Nepenthes. It usually grows like a vine, climbing plants, and can also develop as an epiphyte. You can grow it in a hanging pot indoors, in a greenhouse or in a terrarium. Excellent for beginners. The leaves are long and cascade down. They develop in a rosette from a central stem and end in tendrils. Tendrils serve to support the plant as it grows, and trap doors develop from these tendrils. The hatches first develop like a blister, to reach their adult size in a matter of weeks. As the plant matures, the stems become long and the hatches turn shades of red and reach 8-9 inches long. The hatch opens and lets the digestive fluids appear at the bottom of the hatch. Preys are attracted to the colors of the trap and the nectar secreted under its cover and around the entrance to the trap. The hatch cover does not close. The hatch is very smooth, when an insect is attracted to it, it cannot remain gripped there and slips inside the hatch. The nectar is also very intoxicating. The lower part of the hatch is covered with digestive glands that quickly dissolve the softer parts of the insect, the rest sinking into soup at the bottom of the hatch. The plant has two kinds of hatches, lower and upper. For some species the 2 traps are alike, for others, they are so different that one would think of 2 different species. The top hatches are usually smaller than the bottom ones, often they have no wings and they are attached to the tendrils from behind. The upper tendrils, before forming the upper hatches, wrap around objects to support the rod. Nepenthes are dioecious, the male and female flowers are on different plants. When the insect reaches the bottom, it is dissolved by enzymes, providing the plant with essential nutrients.

THIS LISITING IS FOR 5 SEEDS - SEE ADDITIONAL LISTING FOR GROW KIT

Live Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides) – Natural Elegance for Terrariums, Vivariums & Home Décor

Bring a touch of wild, draping beauty to your setup with Live Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides).

The bonus of letting them bloom is that they will produce seeds. Six to eight weeks after flowering, the ovoid capsule of the fruit having matured, release several small black seeds. The leaves can reach 13 cm long. The Dionaea constantly renew their leaves; old ones die and new ones will replace them. Always remove dead leaves to prevent infections. Death and regeneration of leaves is part of the life cycle of the plant, it does not mean that the plant is not healthy.

Venus Flytrap is very easy to grow, as long as you get the right conditions she can live for over 20 years.

Use a soil composed of 70% sphagnum moss and 30% perlite. You can also only use sphagnum moss, this is the medium in which the plant grows in nature. The plant does not need to be fertilized, this will damage the plant. If it doesn't die, it won't produce traps. Venus Flytrap needs an moist atmosphere and a moist soil. It is a good idea to place a saucer containing an inch of water, under the pot. Raise the pot by placing stones, so that the base of the pot is barely in contact with the water. This will provide the plant with a constant source of moisture. Humidity should be between 60-80%. The water should be distilled or rainwater, since it does not tolerate tap water. The plant has an active growth period from May to October. During this period, the soil should always be moist. In winter, keep the soil barely moist. They need seasons to live long term. Venus Flytrap needs a dormancy period in Winter of about 3 months. A house is too hot for this plant in Winter. The plant should be moved to a location where the temperature will remain between 2 ° C / 35 ° F and 5 ° C / 40 ° F. It could be the vegetable compartment of your refrigerator. Or the bulb can be removed, sprayed with fungicide, wrapped in live sphagnum moss, placed in a plastic bag and in the cold. When the plant goes dormant, all large shoots will die, leaving only a few small leaves, or even just the bulb and its root system. The Dionaea require a lot of light; the stems are thus firmer and the hatches reddish a little. However, protect from full midday sun. This species has tubers underneath the ground. The plants sprout in the rainy season, form rosettes, and then they raise thin stems with tiny peltate leaves. It's a tuberous, growing to 25 cm. Thisis graceful species in leaf all year. Leaves in a flat rosette. The leaves have long petioles which attach to the middle of the leaf blade. It flowers from mid Winter to early Spring. The flowers are hermaphrodite, they have both male and female organs. There is about 5 to 10 flowers on each stem, white or pink in colour. It'a an insectivorous plant and it can survive in nitrogen poor soils because it gets the nutrients it needs from insects. The upper surfaces of leaves are covered with hairs that secrete a sweet sticky substance. This attracts insects, which become smeared with it and unable to escape. The plant then exudes a digestive fluid that enables it to absorb most of the insect into its system. Growth occurs during the Winter months. It is important to respect the seasonal pattern of growth in cultivation. Once the plant starts to die back and enter dormancy the soil should be allowed to gradually dry out as the plant starts storing up energies in the tuber for the next season's growth. During the Summer months, reduce watering. Tuberous sundews can only be repotted when dormant, as the stem connecting the tuber to the soil surface is delicate. Hardiness zone 9, (-5°C/25°F) in Winter. They should be grown in bright light, but with protection from full midday sun. In cloudy coastal areas, artificial light is preferable. Temperatures well above 25°C/78°F can cause them to die back and will kill seedlings. Temperatures should be kept between 20°C/25°C, 68°F/76°F. They require seasons in order to survive long term. They need a dormant period of about 3 months in Summer. At this time the compost should be allowed to dry slightly. This plant variety can be successfully grown in areas where the soil quality is of a poor standard, but prefers a sandy peaty soil. A well drained soil is not required to successfully grow this variety. As long as the plants are kept cool and get lots of light, they are very tough and easy to grow. There's no need to fertilize, as the plant relies on insects for food. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings. This species will grow all year round if kept damp, making it ideally suited to beginners. They can also go dormant in the form of tubers during the dry season. The humidity should be between 60-80%. Fan leaved species such as Drosera stolonifera stolonifera tend to produce several sets of flowers. Some are produced at the ends of the stem, of about 6" tall, while others may be produced on separate scapes emerging from the centre of the rosette. Drosera stolonifera stolonifera is a species that forms rosettes for a few weeks or months before it producing seeds. The plants turn reddish and rust orange with age. An insectivorous plant, it can survive in nitrogen poor soils because it gets the nutrients it needs from insects. During the Summer the pot should not be watered. Temperatures above 25°C/78°F can cause them to die back and will kill seedlings. Temperatures should be kept between 20°C/25°C, 68°F/76°F. They require seasons in order to survive long term. They need a dormant period of about 3 months in Summer. At this time the compost should be allowed to dry slightly. They grow well in a standard sand/peat moss, which can be anything from 50% to 70% peat moss. There's no need to fertilize, as the plant relies on insects for food. The humidity should be between 60-80%. As long as the plants are kept cool and get lots of light, they are very tough and easy to grow. These are interesting, frost-tender, insectivorous perennials that are mostly epiphytic, and with some of the leaves forming a dangling, lidded, colored pitcher to trap and digest insects. Typical for Nepenthes Albomarginata is the white collar of velvety hairs directly beneath the peristome. The red pitchers can be up to 15 cm high, and their texture is velvet-like due to very short hairs. N. Albomarginata has a unique morphological feature: a rim of living white trichomes directly below the peristome. The rim's hairs tend to be missing from pitchers that have caught termites. Researchers say "For several days, nothing would happen, then, after a single night, the pitchers would fill with termites and their rim hairs would disappear." They investigated this phenomenon by placing fresh intact pitchers, together with pitchers with their white rims removed, near to the head of foraging columns of the termite Hospitalitermes bicolor. When the column found the pitcher, termites grazed on the rim. While grazing, many termites (both workers and soldiers) fell into the pitchers. Once in the pitcher, they were unable to climb out. They counted up to 22 individuals per minute falling into the pitchers and noted that the capture rate could easily exceed this for denser columns. After about an hour, the hairs were all gone and the pitcher was evidently no longer attractive to termites (and was filled with termites trying to escape). It is not known how the trichomes lure termites to the plant. They detected no long-range olfactory attraction during his experiments and noted that "all contacts seemed to happen by chance, with termites often missing pitchers less than 1 cm away from them." They also point out that N. Albomarginata is the only plant species to offer its tissue as bait. Hardiness zones: 11(4c/40f) The plants can be found in Kerangas (heath) forests on poor, sandy soil, in summit vegetation of lower mountains or in open areas with peat, limestone or sand soil, from sea level up to 1000 m. Recover the rejections when the plant mother is desiccated and place them in small pots. Hardiness zones: 9-11 (-5°C/25°F, 4°C/40°F) in winter. The tillandsia requires a sharp light in summer and sun in winter. Place it close to a window directed at the west in summer and the south in winter. The ideal temperature in summer is 22 to 24 ºC. In winter the temperature can be cooler (18 to 16 ºC) but it should not go lower than 13 ºC. The tillandsia is demanding on the level of moisture. Keep the water content of the air high. If you do not have a humidifier, regularly vaporize the plant with water at room temperature. If you cultivate it in a pot, place it on a wet gravel bed. Eliminate the yellowed leaves, cut the inflorescence after flowering and vaporize the foliage regularly. This plant absorbs water mainly by its leaves. Regularly vaporize the plant with water at ambient temperature. You can plunge the plant with its support in water at ambient temperature (add a low dose of manure) during one hour, then let drain. If the plant is cultivated in a pot, sprinkle moderately to humidify the substrate, and let drain. Let the substrate dry slightly between watering, but never completely. In winter, when the temperature gets cooler, reduce watering and vaporization to let the soil dry for a short period. The tillandsia does not tolerate mineral salt very well. For the period of growth, fertilize once a month by vaporizing the foliage with a solution of the 20-20-20 diluted by half. The tillandsia develops few roots. This is why it is often fixed on pieces of wood or plates of bark using wire, with the roots surrounded by foam of sphagnum. Its installation can take place anytime in the year, except during flowering. The tillandsia can also be cultivated out of a pot if the substrate is porous and drains well. In this case, you can use fibers of Osmond, sphagnum moss or sphagnum peat, and perlite like substrate, and gravel for the bottom of the pot. This plant once out of pot should almost never be repotted.

THIS LISITING IS FOR 5 SEEDS - SEE ADDITIONAL LISTING FOR GROW KIT

Drosera intermedia, the Spoonleaf Sundew is considered native to the United States of America and can currently be found within 14 States. This Sundew is a temperate perennial plant. Drosera intermedia is found in shallow water in bogs and seeps of eastern North America, Europe, and high elevations in South America. The whole plant height 2-8 inches. The blades are 2-3 times as long as wide. The upper surface of blades are covered with reddish, glandular hairs tipped with a sticky, glutinous secretion that traps insects. The leaves, curl around any captured prey like a fist. It is distinguished from the other North Country Sundew, the Round Leaf Sundew, Drosera rotundifolia, by the oblong, rather than round leaf. The flowers are 1/4 inch wide, white to pale pink, with 5 petals and 5 sepals, and appear between June and September. The plants eat small insects to provide them with the azote which is lacking where it lives. When an insect becomes entangled in the hairs, the leaves bend inwards so that the insect comes into contact with fine, inner hairs. Enzymes are produced by the hairs which dissolve the insect, which is then absorbed by the leaf. Only the insect's exoskeleton remains which blows away when the leaf hairs uncurl to become erect again, ready for the next meal. Hardiness zones 6-9, (-20°C/-5°F, -5°C/25°F) in Winter. They should be grown in bright light, but with protection from full midday sun. In cloudy coastal areas, artificial light is a required. They like cool temperatures. Temperatures should be kept between 20°C/68°F, 25°C / 80°F in growing season. The North American and European varieties require a definite Winter season to survive long term. You should consider growing them outside year round if you live in their natural range. Dormant plants should be kept damp but not wet. They need a dormant period of about 3 months in the Winter. In the Winter, when food is scarce the leaves die back to form a tight resting bud. The typical heated home is too warm in the Winter. During dormancy they should be kept cool and only damp. The entire planter may be moved to an area where the temperature will remain below freezing point, down to -10°F. Protect from dry freezing wind during deep freezes by covering the plant with black plastic. Uncover the plant when the deep freeze and dry freezing wind is over. Otherwise, place it in a refrigerator for 3 months in a ziplock bag. At this time the compost should be allowed to dry slightly. Use peat moss or a mix with up to 50% sand. There's no need to fertilize, as the plant relies on insects for food. Water must be continually available to the roots. Good for an acidic peat bog garden if you've got one. Full sun is preferred. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings. Drosera intermedia likes short pots to be close to the water level and to be very wet when growing. Water must be distilled or rain water because they do not tolerate city or hard water. It is a good idea to place a pie pan or large saucer, with about an inch of water in it, under the pot. Elevate the pot by placing pebbles under it so that the base of the pot is barely in contact with the water, not submerged; the growing medium must stay moist, but never soggy. This will keep the humidity around the plant higher and it will ensure that the plant has a constant source of moisture. This plant is almost extinct in the wild now. This very rare pitcherplant is restricted to Northeastern Alabama, North Georgia, and Southwestern North Carolina. A historical record exists for Tennessee. In nature, you can find it in wet areas, bogs swamps and moist woods and sandy floodplans. The pitchers are 20 to 75 centimeters in length by 6 to 10 centimeters in circumference at the orifice. It only produces nice pitchers in the Spring. The veins become darker and more pronounced with age. Your Sarracenia oreophila will slow down in growth and drop their pitchers by November. In its place will be non-carnivorous Winter leaves called phyllodia. This is perfectly normal. In mid-Summer and in the Fall it produces recurved phyllodia, non-pitcher leaves, that are 5 to 18 cm in length. The phyllodia last until the next Spring and should not be cut off until they turn brown. Its Winter leaves will provide the plant energy through photosynthesis. They trap their prey by offering them nectar to sip which is secreted around the lip of the plant and also at the base of the lid. Flying and crawling insects will find the nectar and if they take a wrong step, they will tumble into the pitcher. Once inside, they will find that retreat is impossible, due to short stiff hairs pointing downward. The inside of the pitchers are also very slippery, even to insects with the best traction. Once the insect reaches the bottom it is dissolved by enzymes in the bottom of the pitcher and the nutrient value is absorbed by the plant. The flowers have five sepals and five petals. They are green and yellow-green. From mid-March to early June the solitary, nodding yellow flowers develop and are approximately 4 to 5.5 centimeters in length. The scape curves at the end so that the flower points down. The flower stalk is 45 to 70 centimeters in length. From July to August, the fruit develops containing numerous seeds. Hardiness zones 8-9, (-10°C/15°F,-5°C/25°F) in Winter. They require seasons in order to survive long term. Sarracenia Oreophila go dormant during the Winter months, requiring 3-4 months of Winter dormancy. This plant is one of the first to emerge from dormancy, and one of the first to go dormant. If it is a very warm Summer, this plant can go into dormancy as early as September. Cool Summers will extend its growing period into October and November. The typical heated home is too warm in the Winter. The entire planter may be moved to an area where the temperature will remain between 2°C/35°F and 5°C/40°F. During the Winter months, restrict watering somewhat, but never allow the plants to dry completely. If left outside during Winter, protect them from dry freezing wind during deep freezes by covering the plant with black plastic. Uncover the plant when the deep freeze and dry freezing wind is over. Sarracenia oreophila does well in a soil mixture of 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite. It requires nutrient-free soil that provides good drainage. Never use potting soil or fertilizer. Potting soil and fertilizer will kill your plant. Adult plants enjoy full sun outdoors. During the growing season, grow your plant outside in full sun, with a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight for vigorous growth. Keep the pot in standing water to keep the soil wet at all times in growing season. The rest of they year the soil should always be just damp as they can rot if kept too wet. Never allow the soil to dry out completely. If you are growing it in a pond, keep the water level halfway on the pot. Avoid drowning the crown of the plant. The pitchers grow to only 6 inches, 15 cm in height. The flowers appear in Spring; they are purple or greenish purple and are up to 2.5 inches, 6.5 cm across. The pitchers are produced each year from stems arising from the rhizomes and remain evergreen. Clip off old leaves to make way for flower buds and new leaf growth. The pitchers are slender at the basal rosette, rapidly becoming swollen higher up. Their outer surface is slippery smooth. They are usually yellow-green to dark purple and most commonly a middle variation with strong red venation. In full sunlight the pitchers are dark red coloured. The hood on the pitcher is positioned vertically; the pitcher usually being full or partly full of rainwater. Insects are attracted to the colorful leaf rosettes that resemble flowers; the red lip of the pitcher is particularly attractive. Red veins that lead downward are baited with nectar. The animal falls into the pitcher, which contains rain, dew, and a digestive enzyme that soon dissolves the victim. Once inside, they will find that retreat is impossible, due to short stiff hairs pointing downward. The inside of the pitchers are also very slippery, even to insects with the best traction. It is necessary for rain to be present inside the pitcher to speed up the process of digestion. With this in mind, plants grown indoors should have a little rainwater poured into the pitchers as they open. They can grow well in pure sphagnum moss, live, long fibered or shredded, as well as the standard peat moss/sand which can be anything from 30% to 100% peat moss. There's no need to fertilize, as the plant relies on insects for food. The humidity should be between 60-80%. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings.
