Cholla Wood Minis

Part of the MiniWoods Collection

Natural Cholla Wood for Shrimp Tanks, Aquariums, Terrariums and Bioactive Enclosures

Bring distinctive texture, natural shelter and endless character to your enclosure with our Cholla Wood Minis. Each piece is a naturally dried section of hollow cholla cactus skeleton featuring an intricate network of openings, fibrous surfaces and beautifully irregular shapes. Measuring approximately 3–6 inches, these small cholla wood pieces are perfectly sized for shrimp aquariums, planted nano tanks, terrariums, vivariums, isopod habitats and other bioactive setups.

Every piece of natural cholla wood is unique. Shape, length, thickness, colour, curvature, opening size and the degree of hollowness will vary naturally. Some pieces may be relatively straight, while others may be curved, tapered, twisted, partially split or unusually shaped. These natural differences make each Cholla Wood Mini a one-of-a-kind addition to your habitat.

Sold individually. Each order includes one naturally selected piece measuring approximately 3–6 inches.

Cholla Wood for Shrimp Tanks and Aquariums

Cholla wood for shrimp is incredibly popular because its fibrous, porous structure provides an extensive surface on which biofilm and microorganisms can develop. Shrimp naturally spend much of their time grazing across these textured surfaces, making cholla wood biofilm especially appealing in established freshwater aquariums.

The hollow structure and irregular openings can also create valuable cover for dwarf shrimp, baby shrimp and freshly molted shrimp. A Cholla Wood Mini can function as a natural shrimp hiding place, grazing surface and decorative hardscape feature without taking over a small aquarium.

Our cholla wood for shrimp tanks works beautifully with:

  • Neocaridina and cherry shrimp
  • Caridina shrimp
  • Amano shrimp
  • Dwarf shrimp colonies
  • Baby and juvenile shrimp
  • Freshwater snails
  • Small aquarium inhabitants
  • Planted and naturalistic aquariums

Unlike large pieces of conventional driftwood, these minis make excellent small aquarium driftwood for compact setups. Use one as a focal point in a nano aquarium or combine several uniquely shaped pieces to create a larger, more complex hardscape.

Natural Aquarium Wood for Planted Tanks

Use Cholla Wood Minis as natural aquarium wood in freshwater aquariums, shrimp tanks and planted aquascapes. Their warm colour and unusual lattice-like texture contrast beautifully against dark aquasoil, green plants, mosses and natural stones.

This planted aquarium wood can be placed horizontally across the substrate, positioned between rocks or arranged to form tunnels and sheltered areas. Aquarium mosses and epiphytic plants may also be carefully attached to the surface to create a living hardscape feature.

As aquarium driftwood for shrimp, Cholla Wood Minis can provide:

  • Natural grazing surfaces
  • Openings for shelter and exploration
  • Cover for small or freshly molted shrimp
  • Surface area for naturally occurring biofilm
  • Attachment points for aquarium moss
  • Texture for planted aquascapes
  • Natural-looking aquarium decoration
  • Hardscape for nano and desktop aquariums

The hollow structure means water can pass through and around the wood, while shrimp can explore both its exterior and interior surfaces.

Cholla Wood for Terrariums and Bioactive Enclosures

Cholla Wood Minis are equally useful outside the aquarium. Our cholla wood for terrariums introduces warm desert-inspired texture, irregular climbing surfaces and natural hiding opportunities to terrestrial environments.

Use this cholla wood terrarium décor across the substrate, partially beneath leaf litter, among stones or alongside live plants. Its porous surface and varied openings create visual detail while encouraging natural exploration and climbing behaviours in appropriately sized inhabitants.

As bioactive terrarium wood, Cholla Wood Minis are suitable for:

  • Tropical and arid bioactive terrariums
  • Reptile and amphibian enclosures
  • Tarantula and true-spider habitats
  • Beetle and invertebrate enclosures
  • Isopod colonies
  • Springtail cultures
  • Vivariums and paludariums
  • Naturalistic display enclosures
  • Air-plant arrangements

Because the pieces are compact and lightweight, they can be incorporated into smaller habitats or used to add detailed foreground accents around larger branches, cork bark and botanical materials.

Cholla Wood for Isopods and Microfauna

Cholla wood for isopods can provide additional textured surfaces, sheltered crevices and natural enclosure enrichment. Isopods may explore beneath, around and inside suitable openings, particularly when pieces are placed near a moist area and partially surrounded by leaf litter.

Cholla Wood Minis should complement—not replace—the essential components of an isopod habitat. Always provide plenty of nutritious leaf litter, decaying hardwood, a suitable substrate, calcium and species-appropriate supplemental foods.

The hollow and irregular structure also makes these minis useful for creating small protected spaces throughout a bioactive enclosure. Springtails and other microfauna may gather around damp pieces as the habitat matures.

Preparing Cholla Wood for Aquarium Use

Natural wood should be prepared before being introduced to an aquarium.

  1. Inspect the piece: Check every opening to ensure it is appropriately sized for your aquarium inhabitants. Avoid using a piece if an animal could become tightly wedged inside it.
  2. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the Cholla Wood Mini under clean water to remove loose dust and natural debris. Do not use soap, cleaners or household chemicals.
  3. Soak before placement: Cholla wood is lightweight and may initially float. Soaking it in dechlorinated water will help saturate the wood so that it sinks more readily.
  4. Boil when appropriate: Boiling can help waterlog the wood more quickly and may remove some surface debris and tannins. Allow the piece to cool completely before adding it to the aquarium.
  5. Expect some tannins: As with many natural aquarium woods, cholla may release tannins that create a light amber tint. These compounds are natural, but pre-soaking and water changes can reduce visible discolouration when clear water is preferred.
  6. Monitor over time: Cholla is a relatively soft natural material and will gradually decompose underwater. Inspect it periodically and remove or replace it if it becomes excessively soft or begins breaking apart.

A harmless translucent or white biofilm may appear after natural wood is introduced to an aquarium. Shrimp and snails commonly graze across this growth. It can also be removed manually during routine maintenance if desired.

Terrarium Placement Tips

For terrariums and bioactive enclosures:

  • Place pieces on stable substrate so they cannot roll onto an animal.
  • Partially nestle the wood into moss or leaf litter for a natural appearance.
  • Use multiple minis to create detailed foreground hardscaping.
  • Position openings where animals can enter and exit safely.
  • Keep the wood away from direct contact with intense heat sources.
  • Inspect regularly in extremely humid environments.
  • Remove the piece if it develops unwanted deterioration.
  • Continue providing essential leaf litter and decaying hardwood for detritivores.

Natural Variation Makes Every Piece Unique

Cholla Wood Minis are natural products rather than manufactured decorations. No two pieces will have identical shapes, opening patterns or dimensions. Your piece may be straight, bent, twisted, tapered, split, narrow, thick, highly porous or partially solid.

Colour may range from pale sandy beige to warm tan or light brown. Naturally weathered marks, uneven surfaces, broken ends and irregular openings are expected characteristics rather than defects. The product photographs show the general assortment and do not represent the exact piece you will receive.

If you need several minis, ordering multiple pieces will create a naturally varied assortment for building a larger shrimp aquarium, planted aquascape or bioactive terrarium.
